Can’t copywriting be written by AI nowadays?
It’s certainly the cheapest option. So, you may be forgiven for thinking so.
However, let’s explore why it might not be such a good idea.
1. Lack of originality
AI creates text learned from existing information on the web. As a result, sales copy written by AI is typically generic and unoriginal.
For SEO purposes, this is particularly undesirable. Additionally, it cannot provide the unique selling points that your business offers.
2. Possibly inaccurate
AI cannot always distinguish fact from fiction. It may create content that is completely fabricated, incorrect or filled with errors. The source of its information is usually unknown.
To be trustworthy and credible, it is important that sales copy is truthful.
3. Lacks human expression
Although AI can simulate natural language in the form of the written word, it cannot produce human expressions and emotions.
Good copy appeals to the reader’s feelings by using emotional and sensory words. This adds personality and flavour to the copy, leading to more readers and more sales.
4. Limited understanding of context
AI excels at generating coherent text after trawling the internet for information. However, it has limited ability to understand and interpret (particularly complex) context.
This limitation is especially an issue if your product or service is more involved. Here, a clear understanding of your product or service is needed. Copy can then be written that fully aligns with the wants of your non-expert target audience.
5. Plagiarism
Currently, a hot topic is AI and plagiarism. This could be a future issue for copywriting, although it is difficult to know the source of AI’s information.
In fact, however, a great deal of copy on the web is both boring and weak. So, it’s definitely not a great idea to copy this type of copy. In contrast, unique, honest and appealing copy could create a major advantage over your competitors.
6. Grammatical issues and long sentences
Although AI writing tools have greatly improved over the last few years, they are still somewhat prone to grammatical errors, typos, and misspellings. Obviously, copy needs to avoid these problems to give a good first impression.
Additionally, unless clearly prompted otherwise, AI may use superlatives and fancy words or write in long sentences with the passive voice, which is inappropriate for good copywriting.
7. Over-reliance on AI
A more general and wide-reaching issue is our increasing overdependence on technology. An essay on the subject could probably be written. But, in short, it risks neglecting human talents and stifling our interpersonal interactions.
Over the long term, over-reliance on AI could harm basic writing skills and critical thinking. These technological tools should be used as a support, not a replacement, for human capabilities.
